High School Testing Out Information
In accordance with Michigan Legislature, Okemos High School allows eligible students in grades 7-12 to test out of any high school course by achieving a qualifying score on district-selected assessments aligned with the Michigan Merit Curriculum. This option is also available to students who have failed a course at OHS.
To earn credit by testing out, students must demonstrate mastery with at least a C+ on a final exam or equivalent assessment. Additional requirements may include portfolios, performances, papers, projects, or presentations.
Testing out exams to determine mastery will be organized as follows:
- A year-long course will use a single test-out period of up to three hours, and a one-semester course will use a single test-out period of up to one and one-half hours.
- In world language, two test-out periods will be used; one for oral testing and one for written testing.
If additional activities are required for testing out, students may need to complete and submit assignments before the testing period.
A student successfully testing out of a course will be awarded credit in that class and a “pass” with no letter grade recorded on the transcript and no effect on the grade point average. Students can only attempt to test out of any specific course once. Students may attempt to test out of multiple levels of world language courses in the same testing-out window.
Families also have the option to complete a Verification of Fluency in a Non-English Language form, available from the OHS Counseling Office.
The procedure for testing out shall include:
- Students must submit a request using the Testing Out Registration Form, available in the grade-level Google classrooms, by May 1st.
- The dates for testing out will be during the full week following the last week of school.
- Admission to AP courses often requires an A or B in prerequisite courses. A C+ from testing out may not be sufficient. Prerequisite details are in the Okemos High School Course Description Guide.
Exams given during the testing-out period are not diagnostic tools. Exams are used for placement purposes only. Therefore, exams will not be distributed to students/families for their review, nor will school personnel hold separate meetings to discuss exam scores. Students will, however, receive the exam score and indication of their pass/fail status.
If you have any questions, please communicate with your student's counselor.
