Safety & Security
The Okemos School District is committed to providing a safe environment for students, staff, families, and visitors.
Our commitment to security includes creating and maintaining a safe school climate and a supportive culture as a foundation for preventing violence and mitigating risk.
Our vision is to implement best practices and resources to prevent targeted violence, supported by the latest research. To keep the OPS community safe and thriving, our district is constantly updating our technology and safety procedures. Those include:
- Installation of new secured entry vestibules in every school.
- Upgraded surveillance cameras.
- Proactive prevention through early identification of potential problems and intervention. Behavioral Threat Assessment (BTA) is a key tool in that process.
- Coordinating Emergency Response efforts, working closely with local, state and federal officials, following best practices and protocols to ensure we are well prepared.
- Each school conducts multiple emergency drills throughout the year to include fire, tornado, and lockdown drills.
By embracing these initiatives, OPS aims to maintain a safe environment together.
