Michigan Seal of Biliteracy

Here are some of the benefits of becoming bilingual:

The Michigan Seal of Biliteracy requires student to meet the following criteria: 

1) Meet all high school graduation requirements

      AND

2) Demonstrate intermediate high proficiency through transcripts or other acceptable documentation

     OR

3) Demonstrate intermediate high proficiency on an approved world language assessment or commercial assessment (pending)

STEP 1: COMPLETE THE APPLICATION 

School staff or parents/guardians will assist with completing the OPS Seal of Biliteracy Eligibility Application and upload records, report cards, or transcripts into the application. For guidance pertaining credit and grade equivalencies in countries outside the United States, please utilize the NCAA Guide to International Academic Standards. All documentation must demonstrate the student received one year of education in a language other than English in 6th grade and above. Acceptable documentation includes: certificates of completion, documents of attendance, report cards, and transcripts.

STEP 2: SCHOOL STAFF DETERMINE ELIGIBILITY

OPS Staff will review applications and verify credentials to determine initial eligibility for the Seal. 

STEP 3: COMPLETE ALL REQUIREMENTS

In April of each year, OHS staff will confirm that all graduation and Seal of Biliteracy requirements have been met - including assessment. They will then apply, on the student's behalf, for the Seal through the Michigan Department of Education.

Once the Michigan Department of Education receives and approves the application, OPS staff will provide the Seal, award letter and graduation cords to the point contact staff member at OHS to present the student during the awards ceremony.
