Dear Apple Blossom Room Families,
Welcome to the Apple Blossom Classroom! I am so excited to be your teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. Begindergarten will be an exciting adventure for you and your parents as you learn many new skills and continue your journey as life-long learners. I know that together we will create a fun, exciting, and educational year.
I have a long and varied history as an educator. This will be my 11th year teaching in Okemos but my 15th year total. Throughout the years, I have had the opportunity to teach grades ppk through fourth grade. In 2002, I graduated from Central Michigan University with a B.S. in Elementary Education with a minor in Early Childhood Development. Shortly after graduating from CMU I was hired as a Pre-Primary directress at Walter French Academy in Lansing. I taught PPK for two years at Walter French Academy and then for two years at Stepping Stones in East Lansing. In June 2008, I was honored to be chosen as the new lower elementary teacher at Edgewood which I taught for two years. When Okemos Public Schools reconfigured the district in 2011 I had the privilege of becoming an upper elementary teacher. After teaching upper elementary for five years I was excited to have the opportunity to become part of the lower elementary team again. Even though I've enjoyed teaching each grade level I have longed for the opportunity to return to teaching the younger children. So when this chance arose I knew it was a perfect match. I am completely thrilled to be the new Begindergarten teacher! The past ten years in Okemos have been absolutely magnificent. I look forward to our adventure together this year. I know it will be a fantastic year!
Besides being a teacher I am a wife and mother. My husband, Marty, and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary in July. In February 2014, we welcomed our daughter, Penny, into our family. Every day is new and exciting! It is hard to believe that Penny is already 4 years old. In the fall, Penny will be returning to OPM at Central as a second year PPK student. Penny has two “siblings”: Coco who is a calm, gentle German shepherd/lab mix and Titus is a loud, rambunctious beagle. Our household is never dull or boring!
On the first day of school I would like to invite the children to bring their favorite flower to help decorate the classroom. It may be a single flower or a bouquet of flowers. Plus, I would like your child to bring a picture representing their summer adventures. Be ready to share with the class why you've selected this picture and why it is important to you. Sharing your picture will give our community an opportunity to hear about something you did during the summer as well as help us learn a little about you. Please send a picture that you don’t mind getting back altered.
I will provide snack on the first day of school (crackers, cheese, and apple slices) so you will not need to bring a snack unless you have a food allergy. In the future, you are welcome to bring a snack from home. We will have snack time each day.
I look forwarding to meeting you all soon and welcoming you to our classroom on Monday, August 27th for the first day of school!
Mrs. Jennifer Schlicher
