• Welcome to Okemos Public Schools Multilingual Learner (ML) Program

    Formerly English Language Learner (ELL)

The Okemos Public Schools seeks to provide every child, regardless of national origin, or native language quality and meaningful educational instruction. In keeping with this mission, students who are Multilingual Learners (MLs) are provided instructional services through an MLL program which is designed to meet their unique needs. Through the Department of Education, the Title III- Language Instruction for English Learners and Immigrant Students- Program is designed to assure speedy acquisition of English language proficiency, assist students to achieve in the core academic subjects, and assist students to meet State academic standards. It also provides immigrant students with high-quality instruction to meet challenging State academic standards, and assists the transition of immigrant children and youth into American society.

Multilingual children learn and develop two or more languages as they navigate their home, community and education settings. Children's experiences, environments, exposure to languages, and opportunities to use language all play key roles in  their language development.

While all children need support, guidance, and positive interactions with adults, multilingual children need additional attention to their individual linguistic needs and experiences as they develop both their home language(s) and additional languages. Supporting multilingual children's early language development is critical for their future success in K-12 systems.
